How Whirligig did for each fight at San Francisco 2001 BattleBots:

Fight 1: vs. Snap Dragon

Whirligig's first fight was against a rookie bot named Snap Dragon, buit by Gregory Gancarz.

Whirligig and Snap Dragon came out of their squares and approached each other. Whirligig started spinning and tore off some parts of Snap Dragon's decorative covering. The bots circled each other a while, and Whirligig continued pounding. At one point, Whirligig's spike got stuck in Snap Dragon's side, but he escaped. After several minutes of this, the match came to an end, and the judges got to decide.

Final score: Whirligig 34, Snap Dragon 11

Fight 2: vs. Recycler

Whirligig's next fight was against another rookie bot named Recycler, built by Don Jennings.

I can't remember this match much, Whirligig slammed Recycler several times, and eventually Recycler stopped moving.

Whirlgig advances after a KO win.

Total time: 2 minutes, 48 seconds

Fight 3: vs. Shrike

Whirligig's next fight was against veteran robot, Shrike, built by Steven Levin.

We were a bit nervous going into this fight, as we knew that the winner of this fight had to go up against the dreaded Ziggo.

The match started well, Whirligig zipped over to the barely-moving Shrike and slammed him several times, then spun around and nailed Shirke's wheel with Whirligig's spike. This apparently disabled Shrike's drive on that side, so Whriligig backed up for a shot at pounding Shrike's topside. However, Whirligig, being quite hard to control, drove right under the arena Pulverizer, and got nailed hard. I wasn't worried about damage from the Pulverizer, we build Whirligig with thicker armor than many heavyweight bots, but as soon as I saw that hammer come down the way it did, I had a thought- The Switch!!

Sure enough, the impact hit Whirligig just right that it turned off his master power switch. Whirligig stopped moving and got hit a couple more times by the Pulverizer, one hit bending his weapon arm significantly. Shrike, able to move with one wheel, advanced to fight Ziggo.

Afterwards, we realized that a simple piece of tape on the switch would have kept this from happening. Arrgh. Oh well, next time Whriligig will be back better than ever!

Total time: 1 minute, 4 seconds

That's it for Whirligig in Season 3.0!
